Cultural Linkages Program
Alternate Care has developed a cultural links program, encompassing educational resources and community involvement to ensure that cultural links between indigenous children and young people are maintained and strengthened.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children/young people have a fundamental right to experience, connect and learn about their own cultural heritage. Learning first-hand from Indigenous peoples, especially children’s own families is the preferred model.
All programs or resources that Alternate Care develop, are aimed at enabling children/young people to gain insights into and appreciate:-
- The histories and cultures of the community to which they belong.
- The histories and traditions within their own family.
- A traditional and contemporary story from their language group or place they call home.
- The diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures.
- Indigenous peoples’ attachment to Country through songs, dances, stories, and art forms.
- The issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today.
